Abscisic acid (ABA) is a 15-carbon acid, related in structure to a carotene molecule. The natural ABA is the cis-(+)-isomer. ABA, like ethylene, is made in response to environmental signals (water stress. ABA was originally discovered because of its role in the abscission of cotton fruits. Another major role of ABA is to induce bud and seed dormancy. A second, important role is the control of stomates in response to water stress.
